Located in the heart of King City, Hogan’s Restaurant serves up high quality steakhouse standards with some European influence. In addition to delicious food, diners can indulge in Hogan’s longstanding history within the town. Built in 1851, Hogan’s was originally called “Hogan’s Inn at the Four Corners” and has since served as many things – an inn, a general store, a residence, and most recently (for the past 50 years), a restaurant. Much of the interior is original, including the windows and paneling, and visitors can even catch a glimpse of vintage paintings showing Hogan’s in its original state way back in the day. The main restaurant is located on the main floor, and boasts three beautifully decorated, old-timey dining rooms and a bar (two rooms are original, and one is part of an extension). There is also a smaller room upstairs that is perfect for private functions, as well as a pub downstairs (The Hunt Pub) that serves pub favourites alongside the same high end food you can order at Hogan’s upstairs. There is even live music every Thursday night at the pub!
Hogan’s menu has something for every taste. They have a variety of delicious starters including an oyster special (available both in the restaurant and pub settings) Monday through Friday from 11am to 5pm that promises $1 oysters (up to an order of 200) from P.E.I., New Brunswick, and British Colombia. Don’t forget to add wine to your order for a truly exquisite fine dining experience!
If oysters aren’t your thing, there are a variety of other appetizers including beef carpaccio, grilled calamari, tuna tartar, a couple flatbreads, and even escargot.
If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, there are also salad options – the one we had was an arugula base paired with cherry tomatoes and avocado. The avocado was very fresh, but we found the dressing a touch salty.
Moving on to main courses, Hogan’s offers a variety of exquisite meats, seafood, and starches. If you’re interested in the latter, there is a mushroom risotto (with wild and field mushrooms, baby peas, asparagus, and asiago cheese) or a fettucelle fruitti di mare (fettuccini pasta with an assortment of seafood in a white wine and cream broth). The pasta was perfectly cooked and fresh, and the seafood was also prepared to perfection. The sauce was delicious and creamy.
Diners who are more into meat may choose to indulge in herb roasted cornish hen, duck confit, beef bourguignon, herb crusted rack of lamb, or a signature steak creation. This time around, we went for the 12 oz 52 day aged New York steak which was tender and flavorful. Personally, we feel it could have done without the accompanying sauce, but that’s just personal preference.
Hogan’s also has some solid seafood options as well, like salmon, sea bass (very highly recommended – see more about this in our post on The Hunt Pub), and the addition of 2 black tiger shrimp or a lobster tail to your steak dinner.
After the main event, you may need a little breathing room, something to wash down all of the deliciousness you just experienced – or, simply something to accompany dessert. There is tea and coffee and a concise dessert list.
For dessert, we had one of our favorites from Hogan’s – the mascarpone cheesecake (full review on our Hunt Pub post). We also tried the chocolate hazelnut cake (pictured below), which was a light and airy mousse cake with a thin layer of actual cake for added texture. If we had to choose between the two desserts, our favourite would still be the cheesecake.
