Mezza Notte Trattoria in Thornhill is one of two Italian restaurants by the same name, the other being in North York. The Thornhill location has romantic lighting and a moderately sized space (not huge, but not tiny). Staff is friendly and service is moderately paced as well.
The menu, like the size of the interior, is just right. There are many good options for salad & antipasto, mains (like pizza, pasta, and meats/fish – even panini!), and desserts/specialty coffees.
Appetizers are what one might expect of an Italian restaurant. There are the staples – bruschetta, caprese salad, and pasta e fagioli – as well as numerous seafood options like cozze marinara (mussels in white wine, garlic, and tomato sauce), fried calamari, and tiger shrimp in garlic and olive oil.
Despite the numerous options, we went with the tried and true bruschetta as our starter. The tomatoes were fresh and had lots of yummy garlic and parsley, as well as sharp grana padano cheese shredded over top. The topping was tasty, but a little on the salty side. The bread was not too soft, but not overly crispy (read: it was easy to eat).
For mains, you may have a bit of trouble choosing between pasta, pizza, or a protein (meat or fish) – even a panini if you go at lunch time. Because we know that Italy is nothing if not the carb capital of the world, we went with pizza and pasta.
Mezza Note offers a variety of pizzas, both white and with sauce. It can be as simple as the pizza napolitana (just tomato sauce and cheese – simple!), as spicy as the pizza calabrese (fresh sauce, mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, hot soppressata, black olives, and roasted red peppers), or as rich and creamy as the pizza rustica (gorgonzola cheese, mozzarella cheese, spicy sausage, and rapini). Although these were all good options, we decided to make our own pizza, topping it with sauce, cheese, grilled chicken, and goat cheese. The crust is super delicious and flavorful and is the perfect canvas for any topping.
There are numerous pasta options as well, including penne salmone (penne with smoked salmon in a rose sauce), crespelle napoletana (pasta crepes filled with spinach and ricotta cheese, mozzarella, and tomato sauce), or rigatoni della nonna (sundried tomatoes, asparagus, roasted red peppers, chicken breast, pesto tomato sauce, shredded ricotta cheese). We personally ordered a meat tortellini in rose sauce served with sautéed mushrooms and prosciutto. The pasta was cooked just a touch too long and broke apart easily. The meat inside wasn’t very flavorful, but the rose sauce with the addition of mushrooms and prosciutto definitely made up for it. If you’re not into pasta, you can also get a risotto like the risotto di bosco (arborio rice, assorted mushrooms, truffle oil essence) or the risotto di mare (arborio rice, scallops, shrimp, clams, mussels, white wine).
To finish off your meal, Mezza Notte offers many desserts for any taste. We got the tiramisu (can’t go wrong with a classic!) and the mixed berry cake. The tiramisu was perfectly creamy, and the right amount of boozy. We found the bottom layer to be a little too drenched in espresso, however (yes, that’s possible). The mixed berry cake was good as well, with tart berries over a creamy ricotta layer and a soft, barely sweet sponge cake. The lower layers could have been a bit sweeter to balance the tartness of the berries, but it was an enjoyable dessert nonetheless.
