Tucked into a plaza off of bustling Yonge Street, Mexican food lovers can find Mexican Amigos, a casual spot for Mexican, Latin American, and Tex Mex delights. The colourful, spacious restaurant also houses the occasional group function, features live entertainment (including multiple televisions to watch any big game on), and free WiFi (very important). The menu is quite extensive and diners are sure to find something that suits their particular tastes. The service is also very friendly here.

To start your meal, Mexican Amigos offers a plethora of mouth-watering appetizers. These include the original amigos nachos and flautas; dips like guacamole and pico de gallo; and traditional Latin favourites, like tamales. We tried the guacamole and tamale, and were in no way disappointed. The guac was wonderfully creamy and packed a lot of flavor and texture with the addition of red onion and tomato. The chips were crispy and definitely tastier than anything that could come out of a Tostitos bag. The tamale was an absolute delight as well, with soft, flavorful cornmeal cooked in a corn husk, topped with subtly spicy salsa verde and fresh cilantro. We would readily recommend either of these apps to set the tone for your meal.

For mains, Mexican Amigos also has a lot to choose from, including classic Mexican favourites like burritos, fajitas, chimichangas, and of course, tacos. They also offer other mains sans-tortilla, like chiles relloenos (pablano peppers stuffed with cheese and your choice of meat/veggies/soyrizo, along with other Mexican toppings) and fish veracruzana (seared tilapia served with sautéed pico de gallo, jalapeno peppers, olives, and cilantro). Most mains are served with two sides – your choice of rice, sautéed veggies, refried black beans, tortillas, or corn chips. We had the chicken tacos and taco salad with carnitas. The tacos were super flavorful thanks to perfectly seasoned chicken and fresh toppings. The rice was also a delicious take on classic Mexican rice. The salad was one of the most flavorful salads we have ever had – so much so that we sometimes forgot it was a salad! The whole thing is served in a crispy taco bowl and topped with cheese, tomatoes, and guac. The carnitas had such incredible flavor that we salivate even thinking about it now. Salad dressings are sweet on their own, but provides nice flavor to the salad. The taco salad comes with a lime vinaigrette.

For dessert – if you’re not already stuffed to the brim – you can choose from tres leche (aka 3 milk cake), deep fried ice cream, or churros. Of course, we sampled the ever-classic Mexican dessert: the churros. They were crispy and coated with cinnamon sugar, drizzled with chocolate sauce and a very creamy caramel. The dollops of whipped cream also provided nice contrast to the heavier elements of the dish (i.e. the churros). Overall, we would certainly recommend the churros – and Mexican Amigos in general – to anyone looking for an enjoyable Mexican food experience.
