This breakfast joint in Newmarket stays true to its name – starting your day off at this quaint and cozy spot is sure to put you in good spirits the whole day through. Outside, the establishment has an understated look, with simple white and orange signage stamped with the signature smiley face.

Once you get inside, it is easy to understand why this simple symbol stands for Happy All Day Breakfast. You are instantly greeted by friendly, cheerful staff and can seat yourself anywhere your heart contents. The walls are a warm shade of yellow with purple accents. A large chalkboard wall to the right of the entrance, the day’s specials and available sides surround a big, orange smiley face that invites you to prepare to enjoy a good meal.

In terms of food, there is something for everyone at this family-run spot in Newmarket. Owners Kim and Phil offer all-day breakfast along with delicious lunch options. Recently, the menu has expanded to include new sandwiches, poutines, and breakfast options, as well as a new salad.

The Cali Benny (pictured below) appears on the new menu, and is already quite a popular item despite it being recently added. The English muffin on the bottom is soft and supports ultra-fresh avocado and tomato slices underneath a perfectly poached egg. There is an option to get the benny with bacon, and we definitely recommend it. The salt and crispiness will add another level of texture and flavor that will take this dish to the next level. The breakfast potatoes served alongside the benny are excellent as well. Unlike most other breakfast joints, these potatoes don’t try to be anything they’re not. They are simple and delicious. If you like a little more umpf in your potatoes, you can also get them sauteed with some onions if you choose, just let the servers know. Distantly related to this benny is the California Salad, which has avocado, strawberries, almond slivers, and raspberry vinaigrette on a bed of mixed greens and romaine lettuce. If you’re looking to make a meal out of this salad, chicken can be added to up the satiety factor of this dish. If you’re set on trying a new benny though, another option is the Smoked Salmon Benny, featuring a classic pairing of smoked salmon, hollandaise, and chives in addition to the essential English muffin and poached egg.

The new poutines on Happy All Day Breakfast’s menu should not be overlooked either – they may be the stars of the show. The Happy Poutine (pictured below) has been available in the past upon request, but was not put on the official menu until recently. We can see why this decision would have been made, though. Regular fries are swapped for breakfast potatoes fried up with onions and smothered in creamy hollandaise sauce. Tomato, onion, and cheddar are also nestled underneath and the entire dish is topped with a perfectly fried sunny side up egg.

For more traditional poutine lovers who still crave a bit of excitement, the Cheesesteak Poutine is a good choice. Traditional, crispy French fries, flavorful gravy, and creamy cheese curds are paired with seasoned roast beef, sautéed onion, green and red bell pepper. The vegetables provide wonderful flavor to the dish as well as a bite of freshness to balance out the heaviness of the fries, cheese, and meat.

If lunch is more your thing, Happy All Day Breakfast has some great new options under the “Happy Lunch Favourites” section of their menu. The Beef Dip is new and boasts seasoned roast beef, sautéed onion, and melted cheddar on a grilled baguette – served with au jus of course. The Greek Souvlaki is also a recent addition and does not disappoint – a wonderfully soft and chewy pita cradles tender grilled chicken paired with onion, green peppers, tomatoes, tzatziki, feta, and French fries in one beautiful package. The dish also comes with the option of fries or a garden salad. The salad option was fresh and tasty – we recommend the Greek dressing.

If you order coffee, servers come around often to make sure that you’re always topped up (just what we need!). Watching happy, satisfied customers leave and new customers welcomed like old friends solidifies the good choice made in visiting this spot. You are also given a lollipop with your bill instead of the usual mint – a welcome addition to a satisfying meal if you ask us!
